Mendes Wood DM is returning to the Dutch seaside for its fourth summer exhibition in the 17th-century church of the idyllic village of Retranchement, on the border with Belgium. The space is just a short bicycle ride away from Knokke, Belgium’s famed beach resort in which galleries and institutions organize cultural events throughout the summer months.

Paper Trails brings together works from a wide array of names from the gallery's roster together with a curated selection of guest artists, that have one thing in common, their use of paper – an ancient and versatile material that, though sometimes considered a modest medium, is often a fundamental and primary practice for many artists.

From watercolor and pencil to sumi ink, collage, acrylic, dry pastel, gouache, graphite, golden Chinese ink, graphite, egg and tempera, and even olive oil, concrete and earth – in abstract or figurative registers – this exhibition aims to shine a light on the many wonderful and varied possibilities of working with this medium.
