"Icônes" is a thematic project that presents a selection of emblematic works from the Pinault Collection that have grappled with all facets of the image: its ability to represent a presence, between appearance and disappearance, shadow and light, to depict a physical space, and to generate empathic emotion. Spanning across a diverse artistic context (painting, video, sound, installation, performance), numerous artists in the collection have chosen to engage with this theme, including Josef Albers, Maurizio Cattelan, Edith Dekyndt, David Hammons, Arthur Jafa, Donald Judd, On Kawara, James Lee Byars, Sherrie Levine, Agnes Martin, Paulo Nazareth, Camille Norment, Roman Opalka, Lygia Pape, Michel Parmentier, Philippe Parreno, Robert Ryman, Dayanita Singh, Rudolf Stingel, Danh Vo, and Chen Zhen. The challenge lies in representing the fragility and power of images while also acknowledging their polysemic nature: the works become appearances, illuminations, revelations, and even transfigurations. In the catalog, in addition to an extensive iconographic comparison, there are essays by Bice Curiger, Emma Lavigne, and Bruno Racine, introductory descriptions of the works on display, and in-depth texts that establish dialogues between the works of certain artists: David Hammons with Agnes Martin; Danh Vo with Rudolf Stingel; Sherrie Levine with On Kawara.
