I close my eyes, I see the forest
“This is a series in which I try to imagine the forest not only through a visual lens, but also a spiritual one. I'm thinking about the makeup of the essential organic mass that allows life to exist. I imagine the organisms that inhabit this place—the dynamics of the tiniest, almost invisible beings to the monumental living giants—the rhythms of light that guide the passage of the day, and how all of this is, quite literally, the manifestation of our most direct channel to the spiritual world. While making these works, I engage in what I call an internal exercise. By closing my eyes, I look inward—into a space that goes far beyond myself. I try to connect with memories of the forest, perhaps from when I existed in other forms of nature, and with deeper feelings that are rarely accessed within the framework of the modern colonial-capitalist dynamic we live in. With eyes closed, I see what inhabits the darkness. I begin to perceive non-figurative forms, colors, movements... and from there, I start gathering all these sensations into matter.”
