Calendar Fall Away shows symbols that evoke official documents generated by the early Spanish colonialists and by the pre-Columbian civilizations that were already inhabiting the space that is now called Mexico. The mash-up confirms conflicting ways of governing and timekeeping, even though the European one emerged as dominant.
As a calendar that has collapsed and is no longer in sync, the work, according to the artist, deals mostly with the present: “We have the official history, but we also have the untold stories. We, artists, are trying to update these stories into the present”, says Castillo Deball.
