Paulo Nazareth
Gifted to Paulo in Egypt by a friendly stranger, he wore it for months, and kept it for years before deciding that it spoke to the Red Inside project about the Underground Railroad. The Enslaved Africans in the American South often found solace in the Old Testament stories of the Jewish people enslaved in Egypt and freed by the prophet Moses who parted the Red Sea. Thinking of this, Paulo embroidered it with an American map with the Free and Slave states delineated and the needle still hung by a red thread down its front. Of course, Harriet Tubman was the Moses to her people and hence the title American Red Sea. The needle hangs as if to say, there is more to be done.
