In 1952, Cy Twombly received a travel grant from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. A budget that takes him to Palermo, Rome and finally to Morocco. In the middle of the Moroccan winter, he visits Casablanca, Marrakech, Tangier and walked in the Atlas. Afterwards Twombly made a series of tapestries and paintings inspired by his trips to Morocco. On this trip he was accompanied by Robert Rauschenberg, it is rumoured they had an affair during the trip.
