Stranger Fruit refers to the symbolism of the tree as a cyclic element of life (life-death-life). Added to this symbolism are the trees that were used to hang blacks. Obá places these bodies appearing as plants, next to plants with thorns, which we can relate to a sacrifice.
It is possible to also make a connection to the Mandragora, an alchemical plant that feeds on blood and has a humanoid shape. Within alchemy, magical attributes are attributed to it.
Stranger Fruit portrays the cultivation of an ancestral memory - not only the religious symbolism, but also the historical aspects that are associated with it, within a context of persecution.
