NHC" refers to "Notting Hill Carnival," connecting to Barrington's ongoing engagement with Caribbean carnival culture.
He builds his canvases using burlap, a material used in Caribbean cacao production, while his employment of stitched yarn throughout his work references the craft traditions of the region.
Through the rhythmic repetition of shapes, colors, fabrics and their dynamic arrangement inspired by music and dance, Barrington creates an ode to the beauty of the Caribbean landscape and culture.
The piece is from the same body of work “Notting Hill Carnival 2024”. Alvaro Barrington brought the Caribbean celebration of Carnival to London with his new series of paintings installed on the Mangrove truck at this year’s Notting Hill Carnival. The celebration coincides with the artist’s Tate Britain commission Grace, an homage to the women who shaped him (January 2025).
