The motif of a contorted figure is something appearing in my paintings often, and here, two canvases are stitched together the bottom Half contains gestural brush marks while the canvas on the upper half of the image is made entirely with airbrush and stencils. iconic to the studio spaces of yesterday, the title “marks on a hard wood floor” calls back to the wooden floors of early repurposed industrial spaces used by artists, - and so this painting is a kind of self reflection, or a portrait of an artist. the central figure in the painting is the subject who unifies the image. A waiting figure, whose face is peering from behind their own leg, looks out at their audience, perhaps someone coming for a visit to the apartment? Referencing two disparate artist Alvin baltrop and Rodin, who mark the cities lutz kinoy lives in- the silhouetted figures of Alvin baltrop this work takes inspiration form his photographs of the piers where soft nude figures are glowing in contrast with the rough industrial space of the chelsea piers- And the watercolors of Rodin, figure studies in soft watercolors like stenciled cut outs the liquidity of the watercolor materials defining ambiguous shadow and form in the works on paper.
