Actor, writer, director, and drag performer Ethyl Eichelberger (1945–1990) was a mainstay of the East Village scene in the 1970s and 1980s. Eichelberger wrote nearly 40 plays, several of which starred him as characters ranging from Phaedra, Shi Liu (The Demon), and Minnie the Maid to Medea, Clytemnestra, and Nefertiti. A friend and favored subject, Hujar photographed Eichelberger in costume, in drag, and nude. The present image was used to advertise Eichelberger’s September 1983 performance at The Pyramid Club.
