One of the central works in the exhibition, Soft Corner, continues Nina’s ongoing research into electroluminescence and its relation to systems of energy and presence. The work explores variations in electrical voltage and the subtle shifts they produce—making visible what is often invisible, and destabilizing technological systems to bring their materiality to the foreground.
A hand-blown neon element nestles into the corner, shaped by the irregularities of breath and the natural deviations of color temperature. Copper pipes run through the piece, connecting it physically and conceptually to other works in the exhibition. These same pipes are visible beneath a missing floorboard in Bonfire, and also carry water sounds that form the basis of a nearby sound work. Soft Corner becomes a node in this network of material echoes, where infrastructure, energy, and breath intersect.
This work was previously featured in the exhibitions:
Group show, Substrate, Center for Contemporary Art (CCA) Tel Aviv-Yafo, Israel, 2023
Solo show, Scree, Nina Canell, MW Brussels, 2022
