In her Tela-Corpo (Canvas-Body) series, Sônia Gomes explores the interplay between sculptural and pictorial elements by combining curved arrangements of graphic media with vibrant color fields. Bulges of fabric push through canvases painted with biomorphic forms—protrusions that feel both integrated and disruptive, blurring the boundaries between body and surface, painting and object. In this series, the artist advances the investigations she has long pursued in her collage work, elevating them to a new level of spatial complexity. She begins with deliberate compositions of volutes and curves on jute, layering them with color fields that establish a dynamic graphic structure. At select intersections, she makes a decisive cut—an incision that opens a passage through the surface. From this rupture, a body of fabrics, wrapped in twisted wire, emerges and extends into three-dimensional space. The result is an unclassifiable form: a hybrid painting in which the physical gestures of the artist take on volume and presence, giving rise to a sculptural articulation of movement, material, and memory.
