Sobre

Incorporando instrumentos e estratégias das práticas do escultor, do escritor e do tipógrafo, o artista britânico Michael Dean investiga a relação entre texto e fisicalidade. Numa exploração das possibilidade tridimensionais da linguagem, Dean muitas vezes “soletra” suas palavras através de um alfabeto de formas criadas em escala humana, empregando materiais industriais e cotidianos, tais como cimento, aço, MDF, cadeados e livros tingidos com seus escritos.

Embora a transmutação da linguagem seja particularmente importante na prática de Dean, suas esculturas não são para serem lidas, mas sim para serem identificadas como um elemento da linguagem em sua própria forma e imaginadas como palavra ou ideia. Ele atribui forma física a uma linguagem pessoal, baseada em uma série de alfabetos tipográficos, que ele mesmo cria.

Abordando a natureza atemporal da intimidade humana, referências ao corpo humano são recorrentes na produção de Dean. Entre as suas formas, encontramos moldes perfurados dos punhos, membros e dedos do artista e dos seus filhos e músculos da língua, que são especialmente emblemáticos, refletindo o interesse concomitante de Dean pelo toque e pela linguagem, já que esta é a parte do corpo que, além de ativar o tato e o sabor, contribui na formação das palavras que saem de nossas bocas.


Michael Dean (n. 1977, Newcastle upon Tyne, Reino Unido) mora e trabalha em Londres.  
 
Dean estudou na Goldsmiths, University of London e desde então conquistou reputação internacional como um dos quatro finalistas do Turner Prize de 2016. Ele participou do Skulptur Projekte, em Münster, em 2017, e foi nomeado para o prêmio de escultura Hepworth Prize for Sculpture, de 2018. Os trabalhos de Dean fazem parte de várias importantes coleções institucionais, tais como Tate, Henry Moore Foundation, Walker Art Center, S.M.A.K., Arts Council Collection, KADIST, The Hepworth Wakefield e Nasher Sculpture Center.
